How to enter test mode and service menu on a Casio Exilim EX-S770?

Instructions

To enter test mode, do this:

  1. Switch the camera off.
  2. Boot to the camera to the firmware info screen: press [Up] and [BS] simultaneously, and while doing so press [Power].
  3. Enter the diagnostic menu: press [Down], [Down], [Disp], [Menu] within 0.5 s total.

The diagnostic menu will look like this:

*1:VERSION INFO
 2:USB TCC TEST
 3:ROM UPDATE
 4:LAST MEMORY
 5:FORMAT

Note that step 3 is stated wrong in the Casio EX-S770 Service Manual, which reads instead: “After the version appears, press buttons in the order of [DOWN], [DOWN], [BS] and [MENU] in 0.5 second. The diagnostic menu appears.” [p. 8], and again, “Press [DOWN], [DOWN], [BS] and [MENU].” [p. 12]. And this confusion is not because of mixing up the EX-S770 and EX-S770D: both the service manual and the camera I tried it on were EX-S770.

But perhaps this depends on the firmware version; my camera had “kx837 Ver 1.00” on the firmware info screen, and the exact firmware version numbers “06.07.27.09.00” (probably the version date 2006-07-27 09:00 [source]) and “1.00.08.00” (the actual version number), as seen when using the “1 : VERSION INFO” menu item of the test menu.

I found the “[Down], [Down], [Disp], [Menu]” sequence actually documented for the Casio Exilim EX-Z11 in user reports [source; English version].

To enter the USB TCC TEST mode / service menu, do this:

  1. Enter test mode per the instructions abvove.
  2. Move the selection to “2 : USB TCC TEST” and press [Set].
  3. Move the selection to “1 : USB TCC ON” and press [Right], [Right], [Set].

Now, the diagnostic menu got some more menu items added and will look like this:

*1:VERSION INFO
 2:USB TCC TEST
 3:ROM UPDATE
 4:LAST MEMORY
 5:FORMAT
 6:HARD TEST
 7:IMAGE TEST
 8:ADJ TEST
 9:TEST SCRIPT

It seems (to me) that the unusual “[Right], [Right], [Set]” sequence to enter that mode instead of just “[Set]” as normal is a means to hide that mode from normal users. However, it is documented in the Casio Exilim EX-S770 Service Manual, p. 12.

Note that this service menu will now appear on every boot. You can skip it by pressing “[Menu]” to enter normal recording mode. Or you can switch it off again by selecting menu item “2:USB TCC TEST -> 2:USB TCC OFF” and then pressing [Set].

Discussion

Pretty much all Casio digital cameras have a test mode and service menu, and there is a great overview of Casio test modes for some older models. Read through the whole list before doing anything in those menus of your camera, as it will give you some impression what not to do to not wreck your camera.

tricky to exit the diag menue on a ex-z75

  2. Do you have the link for the service manual and firmware for a Casio Exilim EX-FC100?
It has the date and time problem. I could enter the internal setuo but I set it to “USB TCC ON” and now the camera is “bloqued”, like wating for something because the screen has some backligth. Thank you.

  3. I accidentally erased the formware of my Exilim EX-FC100 and it is not in any Casio’s service site. Do you know any way of getting it? My camera is dead. Thank you.

  4. Felix, sorry to hear that. I don’t have a link for you, since I only had a EX-S770. I guess if Casio’s service center is friendly they might send the firmware to you. Else, look in the “dubious sources” (warez, filez, filesharing, …) on the Internet. There wasn’t too much available in these sources when I looked for service manual etc. for the EX-S770 and EX-S500, so some stuff might not be available anywhere. But, good luck. It can take some hours to search. Don’t get catched by those offering these files for sale (there are a lot trying this; it’s illegal ayway, and what is for sale on one corner of the Net is very probably for free somewhere else).
