How do I measure distances in PDF files, using Linux?

Import the PDF in GIMP with 200 or more DPI, measure the distance in pixel, and calculate
the distance in mm by: 125*(25.4/200) (here for 125px and 200dpi).

For Acrobat (full version, not reader) on Windows, a third-party plugin “Measure It” is available. See http://www.traction-software.co.uk/pdfmeasureit/ .
